It’s been too long, I’m sorry, but here’s a quick little thought I had on perfection.
I read a thing that said “practice makes perfect.”
It’s a saying that a lot of people tell you when you’re younger to get you to practice more.
The statement was on a pamphlet, questioning the statement maybe? I’m not sure, I just took one quick look.
But it got me thinking – what even is perfect?
People say things like – “oh you played perfectly!” People think things like – I need to practice this until it will be perfect. But the thing is – perfection is just an idea, and ideas change all the time and are different person to person. So does perfection even exist – especially in the world of music, where opinions are mostly and usually subjective ? Yes, intonation can be perfect, technique can also be perfect, but when it comes down to the actual music, the individual’s interpretation of a piece, the intonation, technique, and phrasing will all change based on how the individual person wants to express themselves/the composition.
So I’ve concluded, there is no such thing as perfect. I will never reach perfection, although, I can always strive to get better.
